In response to growing concerns about stress and its impact on mental health, Relationships Australia WA (RAWA) is launching a new ‘Stress Less’ course as part of its Education Services offerings for Term 3.

Relationships Australia WA Education Facilitator, Tina Gratton, who wrote the course, said it was designed to equip individuals with essential knowledge and practical strategies to manage stress effectively.

“In our modern world, stress has become an increasing factor in our lives,” Ms Gratton said.

“We are all susceptible – stress does not discriminate.”

“We need to empower people to effectively manage their stress, and this course gives them the tools to do just that,” she said.

Nodding to a recent survey by Beyond Blue, Ms Gratton highlighted that in 2023, 77% of Australians reported experiencing stress, with a third feeling 'quite a bit' or 'extremely' stressed.

In the same survey, the rising cost of living was cited by 83% of respondents as a significant factor negatively impacting their mental health.

Shockingly, it also reported more than 75% of all doctor’s visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints.

It is evident stress is not only a personal health issue but an economic one, a recent study from the University of Bath also acknowledged that people’s perception of stressful situations significantly affected their health and wellbeing.

“The course teaches its participants to form a comprehensive understanding of what stress is and how it impacts their bodies, health, and overall wellbeing, and helps them identify personal stressors and provide practical strategies to manage stress more effectively.”

“Given the substantial impact of stress on both physical and mental health, learning to manage stress is crucial,” she said.

‘Stress Less’ was developed to address the community’s need for education and skills in stress management.

It is among three new courses on offer at RAWA’s Mandurah Education Service including ‘Parenting Between Cultures’ and ‘Parenting After Separation.’

Relationships Australia WA is committed to improving the mental health and wellbeing of individuals and communities across Western Australia. Our courses are designed to provide practical skills and knowledge to help people navigate life's challenges more effectively.
