Confidentiality and privacy

Relationships Australia WA offers confidentiality under the Family Law Act. All personal information is securely stored and, under the Privacy Act - requests can be made to access your personal information and ensure correction of any inaccuracies.

Counselling for Couples

Counselling can help a couple to:

  • Understand the relationship they currently share and how they feel about each other
  • Rediscover why they were attracted in the first place
  • Find out what they want from their relationship and from each other
  • Consider how both parties contribute to the current relationship
  • Identify what they are prepared to do to make the relationship work.

Counsellors don't make judgements on who is right or wrong; they don't tell clients what to do; and they don't try to persuade people to stay together or to separate.

Counselling for Children and Young People

Relationships Australia WA provides a safe and confidential space to address behavioural, social, emotional and learning problems experienced by children, young people and their families. Our child-focussed service aims to promote wellbeing from early childhood through to adolescence.

Children can attend counselling from 3 years old, and our staff are trained to provide counselling that is sensitive and appropriate for the specific age, development and situation of the child or young person. We are experienced working with families from a range of social circumstances and cultural backgrounds.

What is the counselling process?

In the first session, counsellors will discuss concerns with parents and explore factors that may be influencing the situation. We then work with the child or young person to discuss the issues and to assist them to develop the understanding and skills required to manage the situation.

What sort of issues can you help with?

Matters discussed may include anxiety and fears, family separation, self-esteem, grief and loss, childhood abuse, trauma, conflict with others, or issues relating to school.

Counselling for Individuals

Counselling is an opportunity to discuss issues that are causing concern in a supportive, respectful, confidential and non-judgemental environment. Your concerns may be big or small, from personal ‘worries’ to issues with grief and loss, relationships, with your family or in the workplace.

Matters discussed include couple difficulties, relationship breakdown, parenting, domestic violence, anxiety, depression, grief, sexual issues, childhood sexual abuse, stress and conflict in various situations including work related conflicts.

In the sessions counsellors facilitate discussion about the issues that are causing concern, exploring factors that might be influencing those situations. They support clients to work towards dealing with or resolving the issues in a way that suits the individual client. Counselling sessions can help you regain your quality of life and personal well-being.

Post-Separation Counselling

Counselling programs can help people who are separating and/or divorcing, to deal with their grief and anger, so they can move forward with a sense of purpose and plans for the future.

Counselling may help you to:

  • Look at the changing nature of your relationship
  • Manage the grief and loss associated with a relationship breakdown
  • Assess the real value of anger
  • Identify a pathway for the separation
  • Learn about acceptance and ways to attain it
  • Learn to be single again
  • Gain the strength to consider a new and sustaining relationship.

Counselling and working through the problems of separation with someone who has no personal involvement can help people through this difficult time. Many people live happy, fulfilled lives following a relationship breakdown. Some people choose to re-partner and many do not. There is no right way.

Counselling for Parents and Families

All families go through up’s and down’s. If your family is experiencing relationship issues, communication difficulties or is undergoing a transition or significant adjustment, counselling can help you find solutions to meet your changing needs.

We provide counselling for families, including group and individual sessions, and are experienced working with families from a range of social circumstances and cultural backgrounds.

Our counsellors are skilled in dealing with family relationship challenges and can help support families to assess their needs, identify areas for change, support better understanding between family members, restore trust and communication and ultimately strengthen relationships within the family unit.
