Redress Support Service

Relationships Australia WA supports people who are thinking about making an application for the National Redress Scheme.

Who is this service for?

For anyone who has experienced sexual abuse as a child (up to 18 years) in any institution or group i.e. schools, sporting clubs, orphanages, foster care and religious organisations, group homes or clubs and is considering making an application for the National Redress Scheme.

This service is available to all eligible.

To be eligible a person must:

  • Have experienced child sexual abuse before 1 July 2018,
  • Have been born before 30 June 2010,
  • Have been under 18 years of age when the abuse occurred,
  • Be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident and,
  • The institution responsible for the abuse has joined the National Redress Scheme.

A person is not eligible if they:

  • Are currently in jail, unless there are exceptional circumstances, but they can apply once released.
  • Have already applied for Redress to the Scheme and received a decision.
  • Have already received a court-ordered payment from the responsible institution.

What does the National Redress Scheme do?

The National Redress Scheme provides acknowledgement of the harm that have happened to people who were sexually abused as children in institutions. This may include:

  • A monetary payment of up to $150,000
  • Counselling and Psychological Care
  • A direct personal response from the institution – which is like a personalised apology.

How long does the service go for?

Relationships Australia WA is able to provide people with support until they are finished with the scheme.

The National Redress Scheme closes 30 June 2028 and all applications need to be submitted by June 30, 2027.

How can we help?

Relationships Australia WA will provide support and assistance to people throughout their engagement with the National Redress process, including:

  • Individual support when applying for Redress which can be either face-to-face, online or by phone
  • Referral to other support agencies or legal services
  • Providing all available information regarding the National Redress Scheme
  • Assistance with completing National Redress processes
  • Counselling
  • Assistance dealing with the National Redress Scheme

Relationships Australia WA provides these services at no cost.
