New resources to support families through separation

Relationships Australia is pleased to announce two new resources designed to support families, communities and professionals navigating separation: a refreshed edition of the Share the Care parenting plan booklet, and a series of short animations that bring real separation experiences to life.

Real stories, real support

Four short, animated videos are now available to help people understand and reflect on the emotional journey of separation. These animations are based on interviews with individuals who have experienced separation firsthand. While identities and details have been changed to protect privacy, the stories remain authentic and deeply relatable.

Each animation ends with a powerful message to reflect upon, offering insight and encouragement for those going through separation, as well as for professionals who support them. The topics covered are:

  • Your choices after separation

  • Being flexible and adaptive for our child

  • Being flexible and adaptive for our child

  • My mob have my back

These videos are designed to:

  • Support individuals and families experiencing separation

  • Help professionals better understand the lived experience of separation

  • Foster empathy, reflection and informed support

Updated Share the Care parenting plan booklet

The new edition of Share the Care offers practical, compassionate guidance for separating parents. It includes:

  • Clear explanations of parenting plans and their place in the legal system

  • Templates for decision-making around finances, living arrangements, and education

  • Tips for respectful communication and reducing conflict

  • Pages to record emergency contacts and children’s health and wellbeing information

  • A list of support services and resources

This updated version reflects recent changes to the Australian Family Law Act and includes contemporary examples to meet the evolving needs of families. Feedback from clients over the years has shown that Share the Care helps parents think more deeply about co-parenting and provides a valuable framework during a challenging time.
