Counselling For People With Disability, Carers & Support Workers

If you’ve experienced violence, neglect, abuse or exploitation and are considering sharing your experiences with the Disability Royal Commission, we’re here to help.  

We’re funded by the Australian Government to provide free, independent and confidential counselling to support you, your carers and support workers throughout the process.

Our counsellors will listen to your story and will tailor services to your needs, to help you through times of challenge and change.

Whatever you decide to share with the counsellor is private – it will not be shared with anyone else. 

Registrations for private sessions with the Commissioner closed on 30 June 2022. Written, telephone, video and audio submissions closed on 31 December 2022.

We can assist
  • If you have a disability and have experienced violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation
  • Parents, guardians, and other personal support people of a person with a disability who have experiences trauma
  • If you have been impacted by the themes of the Disability Royal Commission
We can assist you by
  • Providing counselling that undertands the impact of trauma
  • Helping to connect you to other supports and services that we know about
  • Giving you information about other useful services and ways of finding assistance

Everyone’s experience of trauma is different as are their needs, our counsellors are focused on your needs and here to listen and support you. 

A counsellor can help you talk about when something bad has happened or if someone has hurt you. They can also help you if you are thinking about telling your story to the Disability Royal Commission. Whatever you decide to share with the counsellor is private – it will not be shared with anyone else.

This service is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. You can call during this time to make an appointment. If you call outside of those hours you can leave a voicemail.

Need additional support?

If you find it difficult to hear or speak you can contact us through the National Relay Service (NRS). Please phone 133 677.

If you are unable to visit one of our locations please contact us to discuss options.

If you require support in another language you can use the Translating and interpreting Service (TIS National) free of charge by calling our servcie and asking for an interpreter. The counsellor will make the arrangements.

The Disability Royal Commission

The Disability Royal Commission was established in April 2019 in response to community concern about widespread reports of violence against, and the neglect, abuse and exploitation of, people with disability. These incidents might have happened recently or a long time ago.

The Royal Commission is looking at ways to make society safe and inclusive for people with disability. The final report will be submitted to the Australian Government on the 29 September 2023, 

If you would like to share your story with Royal Commission here are some important dates:

  • Anyone who would like to have a private session must register before 30 June 2022.
  • All submissions must be sent to and received by the Royal Commission by 31 December 2022.
