International Women's Day Award

Coordinator of the Newman Women’s Empowerment Project (NWEP) Sammi Ryder is proud to be a nominee for the 2019 Newman International Women’s Day BHP Award.

The yearly award celebrates the incredible women in this rural town who consistently rise above to provide an exceptional dedication to the community and support to the people living in Newman. The awards were presented at the Newman International Women’s Day Black and White Ball in March, where guest speaker Dana Vulin shared her remarkable story of courage and determination to rise above adversity.

Sammi, a mum of three, has resided in Newman for five years, and in 2017 identified a gap in local services for women who were isolated from friends and family for a variety of reasons. After speaking with Aboriginal women across the community, and with the support of Relationships Australia WA, Sammi was successful in receiving funding from Fortescue Metals Group, Relationships Australia WA and the Shire of East Pilbara, to set up a program that would provide local Aboriginal women with a space and opportunity to socialise, learn new skills, and gain knowledge. The NWEP has now been running for two years, and is held in the demountable behind the Newman Baptist Church. As part of setting up the program Sammi has planned and delivered a culturally appropriate program, developed a flyer to promote the program and purchased resources to support the attendees.

Thanks to word of mouth and support from the community, participation has increased and there is fantastic engagement in the workshops presented, on a wide range of topics including grief and loss, parenting, and, art and craft activities. Participants are also provided a delicious meal prepared by Sammi who is also a fantastic cook!

These achievements are made even more outstanding by the fact Sammi undertook all of the above as a volunteer and continues this work today with enthusiasm, passion and determination. Sammi is an excellent role model for her family and community.
